Richard Foster's spiritual formation ministries
www.didymus.org
An excellent resource on spiritual formation and spiritual direction from a trustworthy friend and colleague in ministry
Recommended reading:
Hinds' Feet on High Places
by Hannah Hurnard: a classic allegory that continues to inspire and instruct me every time I read it. I've recommended this book countless times over the years.
The Search for Significance
by Robert McGee: a life-changing read that I stumbled upon years ago. I've used this book in many groups over the years. It has a really in-depth workbook that is worth having (and I don't usually like workbooks). It's not a fast or easy read, but it was the book that helped me understand both my addiction to approval and my compulsion toward perfectionism. Foundational stuff!
A Grace Disguised
by Gerald Sittser: This is the book that Hannah shoves into her bag on page 232. Years ago, Sittser lost his wife, mother, and daughter in a collision with a drunk driver. His story of journeying through horrific pain and grief into a deeper understanding of grace had a profound impact on me.
Waiting: Finding Hope When God Seems Silent
by Ben Patterson: how God shapes us to become more like Christ in the seasons of waiting. A great book!
A Sacred Sorrow: Reaching Out to God in the Lost Language of Lament
by Michael Card: Card's music and lyrics discipled me in my early days as a Christian and have continued to inspire me. This beautiful book looks at the importance of naming our pain to God. Card describes lament as bridging the gap between who we know God to be and what we experience of God during the seasons of sorrow and suffering. Lament "keeps us on the dance floor" with God.
The Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible:
The readings and reflections in this Bible (edited by Richard Foster and others) are absolutely outstanding.
Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home
by Richard Foster: I recommend everything Foster has written or edited. His
Celebration of Discipline
is one of the classic texts on spiritual disciplines.
The Spiritual Disciplines Handbook
by Adele Calhoun: This is the book I intended to use when I started the Monday morning group in 2008. I love this resource! Calhoun presents disciplines in comprehensive, practical, reflective, and life-giving ways. Highly recommended!
